The latest tweets from @darrengrimes. 2 days ago  Rick Grimes 2000 will be spread across all five issues of Skybound X.It will be written by Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, with Ryan Ottley providing the artwork. And yes, Ottley’s cover.

Scott Christopher Grimes (born July 9, 1971) is an American actor and singer. Some of his most prominent roles include appearances in ER as Dr. Archie Morris, Party of Five as Will McCorkle, Band of Brothers as Technical SergeantDonald Malarkey, and the animated sitcom American Dad!, voicing Steve Smith. He is also well known by cult movie fans for his role as Bradley Brown in the first two Critters films. Since 2017, he has been a regular on the Foxsci-ficomedy-dramaThe Orville as Lieutenant Gordon Malloy.

As a singer, Grimes is best known for co-writing and performing the soft rock single 'Sunset Blvd', which spent several weeks on the Billboard charts, and for being one of the four singers in Russell Crowe's band Indoor Garden Party.[1]

Early life[edit]

Grimes was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, the son of Pam and Rick Grimes. He lived in neighboring Dracut for much of his youth, and attended Dracut Public Schools.[2] His sister, Heather Grimes, is also an actress. He is the uncle of Camryn Grimes, who is known for her roles as Cassie Newman and Mariah Copeland on The Young and the Restless.

Career[edit]

Grimes started acting at an early age. In 1984, at the age of 13, he co-starred with Mickey Rooney in a made-for-TV holiday movie titled It Came Upon the Midnight Clear.[3] In 1985, he appeared in an episode of the Twilight Zone called 'Little Boy Lost.'

Grimes also began singing in childhood, and in March 1986 appeared on a Bob HopeTV special, singing 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow.' The special was taped in Sweden with the King and Queen in attendance. In 1987, he performed as a guest vocalist on the Time album by Richard Carpenter of The Carpenters, where Carpenter thanked the 15-year-old Grimes for his 'spirited' performance, commenting in the liner notes, 'I believe young Scott to have quite a future in music.' Grimes' first music album, Scott Grimes. was released by A&M Records in 1989, with the single 'I Don't Even Mind' and produced by Carpenter. In 2005, he released his second album, Livin' on the Run, and in 2010 his third, Drive.

In 1987, Grimes voiced Pinocchio in the dark animated film Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night. In 1988, he appeared with Dwayne Hickman, Connie Stevens, and her daughter Tricia Leigh Fisher in the TV movie Bring Me the Head of Dobie Gillis; Grimes, Hickman, Stevens, and Fisher also appeared on the All-Star Super Password Special with Bert Convy.[4] He had also guest starred on the NBC sitcom Wings. He is also known for his 1987 recurring role on Who's the Boss as Alyssa Milano's character's love interest, Chad McCann and his regular appearances in the 1994–2000 series Party of Five as Will McCorkle.

Grimes starred on the NBC series ER playing Dr. Archie Morris from 2003 until the series' end in 2009. Initially a recurring character on ER, he later was upgraded to a main role in season 12. The character initially provided comic relief, but grew over the years, becoming central to several episodes and story lines in the series' final seasons.[5]

Since 2005, Grimes has voiced Steve Smith in the American animated sitcom American Dad! He has also voiced the recurring characters Midget Assassin and Frat Guy, as well as several additional characters, each of whom appear in only one episode. [6]

Grimes' film credits include the dark comedyWho's Your Monkey and Ridley Scott's Robin Hood with Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett. On October 11, 2010, Grimes announced on his Twitter that he would voice a character on the animated series Family Guy,[7] which would turn out to be Joe Swanson's previously thought-to-be-dead son, Kevin Swanson. On March 19, 2013, he was cast as Dave Flynn on the NCIS: Los Angeles episode entitled Red, the first episode of a two-part backdoor pilot to another NCIS spin-off which would have been named NCIS: Red, but it was not picked up. Grimes had previously appeared in an NCIS episode entitled 'Baltimore' in 2011 as Detective Danny Price, Anthony DiNozzo's former partner at the Baltimore P.D.

Since September 10, 2017, he has played cocky helmsman Gordon Malloy, the best friend of Captain Ed Mercer (Seth MacFarlane) on Fox's sci-ficomedy-dramaThe Orville, created by executive producer MacFarlane.

Personal life[edit]

Grimes has a son and a daughter with his first wife, Dawn Bailey-Grimes, whom he married on May 5, 1997.[5] In December 2011, he married Megan Moore. She filed for divorce in October 2017.[8] At the San Diego Comic-Con in 2018, it was revealed that he was dating his Orville co-star Adrianne Palicki. The two announced their engagement in January 2019,[9] and married in Austin, Texas on May 19, 2019.[10][11] Two months later, in July 2019, Palicki filed for divorce, but had it dismissed in November.[12][13] The couple separated again in June 2020, with Palicki again filing for divorce in July.[14]

Over the weekend, the billionaire CEO of Tesla Elon Musk and his partner, the pop star Grimes, had a public falling out on Twitter. It began with Grimes responding to a Musk tweet that has been widely interpreted as transphobic and ended with the musician deleting the replies. Unfortunately, many in the media and on social media saw the conflict as “hilarious.”

Twitter

“I guess it’s kind of funny that rich idiots like Elon Musk and JK Rowling had successfully used years of expensive PR to build up legends around themselves and then managed to ruin that entire perception by refusing to log off,” quipped Joseph Fink, of the Welcome to Night Vale podcast.

There’s certainly an appeal to watching Musk humiliate himself. But his comments on Twitter and their subsequent impact on his relationship weren’t just schadenfreude. They were transphobic, and in context seem like they were designed specifically to target and humiliate his partner in a massive public forum. Laughing at Musk and Grimes fighting feels cathartic. But it’s less funny to think we’re watching publicly transphobic, misogynist abuse playing out in real time.

Elon Musk pointedly tweeted “Pronouns suck” on Twitter, prompting Grimes to respond. Twitter

Musk’s initial tweet was short; it simply said, “Pronouns suck.” This was widely interpreted as a backhanded swipe at trans people, and especially at nonbinary people who use nongendered pronouns such as they/their. Grimes certainly read it as transphobic. Their reply read, “I love you but please turn off ur phone or give me a [c]all. I cannot support hate. Please stop this. I know this isn’t your heart.”

Grimes quickly deleted the tweet. But this is not the first time the musician has spoken publicly about trans issues. Grimes identifies as “gender neutral” and says that they are “impartial to pronouns for myself” but wishes that “I didn’t have to be categorized as female constantly.”

Grimes Twitter Baby

No doubt in part because of their own experience with gender identity, Grimes wanted to practice gender-neutral parenting. After Grimes’ first child with Musk was born in May, they decided not to assign the baby a gender until the child is old enough to choose their identity for themselves. “I don’t want to gender them in case that’s not how they feel in their life,” Grimes said.

Musk had supposedly agreed to this parenting choice. But his transphobic tweet suggests he may be less supportive than he’s indicated. Since Grimes is nonbinary, the tweet reads not just as an attack on trans people, and not just as an attack on Grimes’ parenting, but as an attack on Grimes’ own identity. Musk was being transphobic in general. But he was also, specifically, sneering at and directing hate at his significant other, in public.

This isn’t exactly surprising. Musk’s first wife, Justine, has described their relationship as borderline abusive in a long Marie Claire profile. “He had grown up in the male-dominated culture of South Africa,” she says, contextualizing the power plays in their relationship. “This, and the vast economic imbalance between us, meant that…a certain dynamic began to take hold. Elon’s judgment overruled mine, and he was constantly remarking on the ways he found me lacking.”

Tesla employees have also said that Musk often acts like a volatile, difficult, arbitrary bully. “Everyone in Tesla is in an abusive relationship with Elon,” one former executive once told Quartz.

Moreover, transgender and nonbinary people experience terrifyingly high rates of abuse. Almost half of all transgender people have been sexually assaulted at some point in their lives; 78% of trans youth report being harassed. There is not a lot of research on domestic abuse of trans and nonbinary people. But a study in Scotland found that 73% of trans and nonbinary respondents had been the target of transphobic behavior from their partners.

If Musk had used misogynist slurs to attack his partner, public reaction might be angrier and less amused. But the trans rights movement is relatively recent, and right now transphobia in the public sphere is in many venues even more acceptable than sexism.

Part of that transphobia is the idea that trans and nonbinary people are funny, and that their oppression isn’t dangerous or serious. A fight over pronouns can be characterized as trivial or ridiculous; transgender and nonbinary identity itself is often portrayed as an affectation. Musk himself seems to be laughing when he sends an offhand tweet like, “Pronouns suck.” An attack on trans people is framed as casual humor, not hate.

Grimes Elon Musk Twitter

Grimes’ tweet in response to Musk wasn’t that long either, and we of course can’t know precisely what they’re thinking. They may just be expressing solidarity with other nonbinary and trans people. But when you’re nonbinary, and your partner goes out of his way to publicly express hatred towards nonbinary people, you could have very reasonable fears about your own safety and the safety of your child. Either way, Grimes obviously doesn’t see Musk’s bigotry as a joke. Neither should we.
